New Narratives Graduate Student Workshops
CNNP is committed to enabling graduate students to include understudied figures in their research and invigorate their teaching with topics that speak to the concerns of today’s students. Although historical discussions and texts can serve as a powerful means of doing so, finding the necessary time and tools to excavate long-buried historical materials is challenging. In Spring 2018, Columbia PhD students formed The New Narratives Graduate Student Working Group to organize workshops for graduate students and current faculty. These workshops make it easier to include new topics and integrate new narratives into the scope of graduate students’ philosophical thinking, courses, and scholarship. At each workshop, graduate students organize and comment on faculty panels in addition to engaging in break-out discussions with faculty and other students. Our third annual workshop will take place in Fall 2020.
Symposiums
The Center for New Narratives in Philosophy hosted their second Annual Graduate Student Symposium on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Columbia University. This year’s Symposium was co-sponsored by the Center for Race, Philosophy, and Social Justice, and Columbia’s Committee on Equity and Diversity. We brought together over 50 senior faculty, junior faculty, and graduate students from Columbia and other universities, to discuss the works of underrepresented thinkers in the history of philosophy and pedagogical tools to incorporate them into philosophy courses.
The Center for New Narratives in Philosophy hosted its first Graduate Student Symposium on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018 at the Philosophy Department at Columbia University. It brought together 37 senior faculty, junior faculty, and graduate students from Columbia and other universities to discuss Marie de Gournay, Émilie du Châtelet, and Mary Shepherd. In addition to learning about these philosophers’ understudied texts, participants brainstormed ways to incorporate the new material into courses and research.
